SUMMARY:
La Riera de Santa Coloma has a typically Mediterranean hydrology of very changing dynamics, with significant floods in spring and autumn, and coming to dry completely during the warmer months. In addition, this is exacerbated by the increasing trend of extreme events caused by climate change. After the episodes of Gloria in 2020, the banks of the stream were highly eroded, leaving its route virtually free of riparian vegetation and with the appearance of numerous stands of exotic vegetation such as American cane (Arundo donax) and robinia (Robinia pseudoacacia). . Taken together, it causes erosion phenomena to occur more easily when there are episodes of increased flow, as there is no good root system to retain runoff. All this leads to a reduction in biodiversity and, in return, a loss of the ecological quality of the environment.
In this way, the Emys Foundation has entered into a collaboration agreement with the City Council of Santa Coloma de Farners with the aim of (i) consolidating the eroded bank of the stream and (ii) recovering the ash grove. To achieve these objectives, work has been done on three lines of action, which consist of the installation of living beams that allow to hold the substrate, retaining the most superficial layers of the soil and revegetating the area, the planting of riparian forest with the help of an institute and the Riera Viva Platform and revegetation with helophytes to create shelters, improve water quality and consolidate the margin.
RESULTS:
- Margin consolidation.
- Recovery of ash with small-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia).
- Revegetation with helophytes such as yellow lily (Iris pseudacorus), aloc (Vitex agnus-castus), willow (Lythrum salicaria) and Carex pendula.
