SUMMARY:
During 2015, a clogged irrigation pond, known as Clot del Llop, was recovered in Can Menescal. The following year, the Cal Pep pond was created in the Torrent area of Mas Gavatx, with the intention of generating a new habitat for herpetofauna and avifauna. After a few years of these first actions, the natural evolution of both the native species (Can Menescal case) and the exotic species of flora (Cal Pep case), has led to a reduction in the surface of both points. of water. This may have several associated problems, such as (I) reduced insolation in the pond, (II) increased nutrient load, (III) increased difficulty of access for terrestrial wildlife, (IV) loss of open space in the margins or (V) increase in the dominance of the fastest growing species, among others. Taken together, these processes lead to a general reduction in the ecological quality of the environment, reducing the diversity of species.
In this way, the Emys Foundation has entered into a collaboration agreement with the City Council of Santa Coloma de Farners with the aim of (I) slowing down these problems and (II) increasing the ecological potential. To achieve these objectives, work has been carried out in three lines of action, which consist of clearing the bushes in the Can Menescal pond and removing the reeds and subsequent revegetation with helophytes and hydrophytes in the Cal Pep pond. .
RESULTS
At Can Menescal:
- Shrubbed on the margins to slow down the expansion of the bramble (Rubus ulmifolius).
At Cal Pep:
- Reed clearing and extraction of the rhizome to reduce the area occupied by the reed and provide more space for vegetation.
- Planting of helophytes and hydrophytes to promote the heterogeneity of environments and the oxygenation of water
