SUMMARY:
The agricultural and livestock areas represent 40% of the surface of the European Union. Therefore, the agricultural practices carried out in these areas have a strong influence on the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services throughout the continent. If practices are respected, agriculture can sustain high levels of biodiversity and be remarkably productive for a long time. Conversely, if management is too aggressive, agriculture can pollute the environment, endanger biodiversity and erode land, endangering the agricultural function of the land in the long run. Great efforts have been made by the administrations to optimize the application of hazardous fertilizers and pesticides, but much less attention has been paid to the conservation of non-productive areas of agricultural farms, ie semi-natural habitats such as the margins of fields, forests, ponds or meadows.
Farmers and agricultural technicians are beginning to appreciate the importance and benefits of conserving these areas for agriculture and their productivity (substantial improvements in pollination, pest control, protection from wind or water, purification). of water, among others) but often do not have the practical knowledge or tools to implement these conservation actions properly.
In this context, the Resifarms project aims to develop the skills of farmers and agricultural technicians in the conservation of semi-natural habitats. The aim is to promote the implementation of the most effective conservation actions to favor agricultural production and at the same time protect and enhance biodiversity.
