SUMMARY:
Soil is considered one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, but agricultural soils tend to have little biodiversity due to inappropriate practices. Catalonia's agricultural soils are no exception, and are generally poor in nutrients and biodiversity, which causes many agronomic and environmental problems, such as low water retention, erosion, disease incidence, soil compaction or soil pollution. 'groundwater.
RESULTS:
This demonstration project has brought together a composting methodology capable of rapidly regenerating the soil in the Catalan agricultural sector: farmers, technicians, students and amateurs have participated in more than a dozen workshops for different audiences, which have served to show the methodology of fertilization that has been applied in this orchard and the changes of fertility, biodiversity, health and production that have been derived from it.
Soil fertility and biodiversity have been monitored between September 2017 and September 2019 and it has been observed, for example, that organic matter (a factor closely related to the amount of life in the soil) is has more than doubled in just over two years, fixing 5.1 tonnes of carbon in the ground, the equivalent of emissions from 25,000 km of cars.
